#Researchers found a surprising link between loneliness and early death in seniors.
Even if you're living with someone, hanging out with friends or family matters a lot. It's super important to make sure that loved ones visit older folks at least once a month to help reduce the risk of them passing away early. Regular social interactions can really boost mental well-being, making life better and longer for seniors.
The Daily Mail in the UK pointed out that loneliness is heavily linked to early death in older adults, based on research from the University of Glasgow. They followed around 450,000 people over 12 years. Initially, the average age was 57.
Throughout the study, they asked about:
– How often family or friends visited
– Participation in group activities
– Whether they lived alone
– Whether they felt they could open up to someone
– How often they felt lonely
These questions helped the researchers understand the impact of social engagement on mortality.
Over the 12 years, 331,135 people died.
The researchers found that folks who saw friends or family less than once a month were more likely to die.
People who never got visits had a 39% higher risk of death compared to those who saw loved ones daily. But those who had visits more than once a month had a lower risk of death. Regular visits give emotional support and help cut down on loneliness.
The research team said this is because socially isolated people are more likely to pick up unhealthy habits like smoking or drinking. Jason Gill, one of the study's co-authors, mentioned that “people who are very isolated and never meet friends or family, or meet them less than once a month, are at risk,” and he also suggested that “visiting elderly relatives living alone nearby would be beneficial.” Regular interaction can also lead to healthier habits.
Dr. Hamish Foster, the study’s lead author, added, “Even if you live with someone, you are still at risk if you do not interact with friends or other family members.”
Regular social interactions can help with this risk.
Besides family interaction, he noted that people who join in activities like singing lessons or church weekly have a lower chance of dying. Doing these activities gives a sense of belonging and purpose, which is really good for mental and physical health.
This highlights how important it is to keep social connections strong to support the health and longevity of older adults.
