A Singapore study reveals that 9 in 10 receive "burdensome" medical interventions, even when comfort is the primary goal.
The study highlights a critical need for better support and information for caregivers. Many feel ill-equipped to make care decisions and lack a clear understanding of their loved one's prognosis. (Source: Channel News Asia)
Therefore, we need to prioritise open conversations between caregivers, healthcare providers, and families. We need to ensure that comfort, dignity, and quality of life are at the forefront of dementia care.
Top six key things to keep in mind when caring for someone with dementia:
1) Safety First
Create a safe and secure environment. This means minimizing hazards like tripping risks (rugs, clutter), ensuring good lighting, and installing safety devices (grab bars in bathrooms). Wandering is common, so consider alarms or monitoring systems.
2) Good Communication
Dementia affects communication skills. Speak clearly and slowly, use simple language, and be patient. Nonverbal cues like touch and facial expressions can be very helpful. Avoid arguing or correcting them constantly.
3) Establish Routine
Consistency and routine can reduce anxiety and confusion. Maintain a regular schedule for meals, activities, and sleep. Familiarity provides comfort.
4) Focus on Strengths
Dementia primarily affects memory and cognitive function, but individuals often retain other skills and abilities. Encourage participation in activities they enjoy and are still capable of doing. This promotes a sense of purpose and self-worth.
5) Manage Behavioural Changes
Dementia can cause behavioural changes like agitation, aggression, and wandering. Identify triggers and try to address them. Use calming techniques like music, gentle touch, or a quiet environment. Consult with a doctor about medication if necessary.
6) Prioritise Personal Care
Assist with personal hygiene, dressing, and eating as needed. Adapt tasks to their abilities and allow them to maintain as much independence as possible. Be patient and respectful.
